Welcome!
Thank
you for reading the 5th issue of the ADM (Account Development
Manager) Corporate Connection Newsletter!
In this issue, the
"Top Tips" section focuses on indexing and whether or not indexed
databases are worth the investment. The "Did you know..." section
covers some very big developments on the ScienceDirect platform,
including improvements to the Cost Code feature and ScienceDirect's
new partnership with NextBio. In the "What's New?" section, you'll
find details about recent product releases as well as some helpful
search tips to get the most from each of our products. As always,
please check out the links to our open online sessions for our
products - feel free to send links to the open sessions directly to
end-users.

Top Tips
Does indexing really
matter? In the article, "The Weaknesses of Full-Text Searching", by Jeffrey
Beal (The Journal of Academic Librarianship, volume 34 issue 5
September 2008, pg 438-444), Mr. Beal makes the case that full-text
searching relies too heavily on end-users selecting appropriate
keywords. Full-text searching, according to Mr. Beal, "...fails to
retrieve synonyms, and [it] also retrieves unwanted
homonyms."
As I researched this issue's hot topic, the value
of indexing became even clearer to me: when I searched Google for
the value of indexing, Google was unsure whether I meant the
indexing of information, the stock market index, or indexed
annuities. Of the 5.8+ million records retrieved by Google, how many
were "false drops"; or hits that matched my terms but were
irrelevant? And as you know, there is no way to "refine" your Google
search result set: how exactly can one navigate 5.8+ million
records? Research shows that the average person doesn't make it past
the 5th page of Google results.
Numerous independent studies
show that increasing the "findability" of information - through
indexing and refinement options - can save your organization time
and money, as well as help your end-users be more innovative and
productive. There are a number of different products which can
assist in this area. Some are subject specific with a subject
specific thesaurus (such as EngineeringVillage or EMBASE.com); some allow you the ability to refine
results across literature, web and patent information in one place
(such as Scopus). Most companies which provide these types
of research tools allow you to trial the products, giving you and
your end-users the opportunity to truly assess the
value.

ignorance." Benjamin Franklin |

ScienceDirect
improvements to the Cost Code
feature ScienceDirect has now made it easier for
account administrators to charge back costs of unsubscribed
publications to other departments. The inclusion of Cost Codes
in ScienceDirect enables you to keep track of researchers'
downloading activities. Additionally, export functionality has
been added to the Admin Tool to allow you to easily transfer
the data to an Excel spreadsheet for further slicing and
dicing. The account administrator can choose to allow the
purchaser to enter the cost code directly into a free text
field, or a list of cost codes permitted to make use of the
transactional download balance can be added into the Admin
Tool with simple copy/paste functionality. NOTE: Adding cost
codes to an account means that the cost code entered by a
researcher, in the process of requesting an unsubscribed
publication, will be validated against the cost code list in
the Admin Tool.
If you have questions about the Admin
Tool and the enhancements to the Cost Code feature,
please contact your Account Development Manager or Account
Manager.
ScienceDirect partners with
NextBio NextBio on ScienceDirect: Accelerating
Scientific Discovery in Life Sciences, Health Sciences and
Chemistry
Elsevier and ScienceDirect have partnered with
NextBio to provide researchers with text-mining tools
and research data from high-quality publicly available sources
of information.
This enhancement on ScienceDirect
provides researchers with intelligent connections extracted
from ScienceDirect content (published from 1995) as well as
ScienceDirect peer-reviewed literature together with publicly
available research data as compiled by
NextBio.
ScienceDirect researchers can now access
enriched content in the fields of life sciences, health
sciences and chemistry. NextBio's search engine uses extensive
biomedical ontologies to make intelligent correlations between
data sources. By incorporating this technology on
ScienceDirect, researchers can - on one single platform -
analyze ScienceDirect peer-reviewed literature together with
publicly available research data from PubMed, clinical trials,
experimental data correlations and news
articles.
Elsevier's partnership with NextBio
demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing researchers
and librarians with access to enriched content and value-added
workflow tools to accelerate research. |
Reaxys
has recently enhanced the filtering
capability. For selected Filters, you can now
choose to filter by Value, such as MW=250-400, as well as the
previous method of checking boxes representing selected ranges
or values of the property.
A second enhancement
concerns the "More" link feature once a filter is opened. For
example, if you select the Bioactivity filter then click the
"More" link below the list of checkboxes, you will be
presented with a new window that allows the user to enter
values for the Pharmacological Effect field or Type or any
other field in that section of the data structure. This
provides data searching in a dynamic way, rather than using
the Form-based or Advanced Search capabilities when posing the
original query. This is a much more natural way to use the
extensive amount of data in Reaxys in a workflow that returns
to the user exactly the compounds they want with exactly the
data they want.
A third enhancement is the inclusion of
a "Hit Data" link at the top of the list of links displaying
what data is available for a compound. This is added after a
filter has been applied. Selection of this link will lead you
to only the data that met your specific filter criteria. For
example, filtering on the Pharmacological Effect is
"antiviral" will provide the "Hit Data" link showing only the
specific Bioactivity data that specified the Effect as
antiviral. This might be a small subset in a vast amount of
Pharmacological data for that compound, and can save
considerable time and effort finding exactly the data you
requested.
Find more information on this as well as
other recent enhancements to Reaxys at http://info.reaxys.com/
or use the "About Reaxys" link at the bottom of the Reaxys
login page.
