Top Tips
Knowledge Management (KM) There are likely some "Knowledge Management" programs being discussed by senior management at your organization, and there are two key ways that you can leverage your expertise and position within your organization to assist with their KM efforts:
- Leverage what you know: In your organization right now, there are many experts. How much of their expertise goes with them when they go home at night? You likely subscribe to numerous services and subscriptions. Are they fully utilized?
- Market yourself: Make sure that the people in your organization understand the value of your expertise and resources. Internal email campaigns, information service awareness days, and internal 'electronic library' web pages/SharePoint sites can help promote your services.
- Organize expert speakers and training programs: 'Expert speakers' may be people within your own organization sharing their insights and experience. 'Training' can be only 20 to 30 minutes, showing end-users best search practices and other valuable research information.
- Start a mentor program: Most of us have had a 'mentor', though perhaps not officially. A great resource on this topic is: Teach What you Know, by Steve Trautman. This book is an invaluable resource when trying to get information out of the minds of company experts.
- Solution and Information Tools for the things you don't know: For expertise outside your organization, it's worth the investment in an online tool which aids in more productive research. We've highlighted two Elsevier products here, but there are other product/companies in this sphere as well.
- An abstract and Citation Database - Scopus (info.scopus.com): 16000 literature source titles across 4000 publishers, 435+ million science websites, 5 different patent offices, one easy to use web-based search platform. Independent research studies show that research tools like Scopus can make your staff 3x more productive. Scopus can be a great resource for competitive intelligence programs.
- An innovation tool - Illumin8 (www.illumin8.com): This innovative new search platform (searching across abstracts, ScienceDirect full-text, web, and patent information) uses a natural language thesaurus and semantic indexing to provide you with technology landscapes, solutions, approaches, experts and more. Illumin8 essentially "reads" text for you and is invaluable when searching what you don't know (during brainstorming/ideation/innovation).
