Top Tips
Internet Information Trends and the Research Process
This Top Tips is devoted to two key information trends which may help your organization make the most of its information services and assist your end-users in the research process: Link Resolvers and RSS.
Link Resolvers
What is a link resolver? A link resolver is a software which integrates all of your full-text content together in one easy to use link. For example: Let’s say you have an online subscription to journals on ScienceDirect, a print subscription to journals from the American Chemical Society, an online subscription to journals from IEEE, and use a document delivery service for unsubscribed articles. A link resolver will tell end users exactly what they have access to, where they can locate the resource, or how they can easily order the article. Link resolvers can be embedded in paid search tools, such as Engineering Village and Scopus, or even in free search tools such as PubMed. They add transparency to your information services and help your end-users save time and money.
Link resolvers can be developed internally – some large companies and academic institutions tend to do so. There are also many options to purchase a link resolver from organizations such as Ebsco, Serials Solutions, SFX or Endeavor.
RSS
RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” – a format (XML) for delivering web content. News sites, online publishers and search engines (ScienceDirect, Engineering Village, Scopus, PubMed, etc) have embedded this technology into their platforms bringing content you are interested in directly to your own “aggregator”. An aggregator is an RSS reader – typically a free online software tool allowing you to filter all of your RSS feeds into one page. Popular aggregators include Newsgator, Google Reader and Bloglines.
RSS can make a big difference in the research process as it can be used to collaborate and share information with teams and departments. For many, RSS is replacing email alerts. |

ADM Support for your Subscriptions
Training and support by the ADM team is a free part of your subscription and key in making the most of your valuable information investment.
Training
Training is crucial to ensure that end-users are using the databases to their fullest potential. There are open online training sessions for products available on the Elsevier for Industry site. In addition to open online training courses, your ADM can provide customized online or onsite training sessions throughout the year. Contact your Account Manager or Account Development Manager to arrange a training session.
Promotional and Training Materials
In addition to training, promotional items – such as pens, post-its, magnets, etc. – and user guides can be provided by your Account Development Manager. User guides and training materials for most products are available in electronic format, which is a “green” way to promote your resources. Promotional items can be used to keep resources fresh in the minds of your end-users. Please contact your Account Development Manager for more details. |
Customized Sessions for Specific End-User Groups
General end-user sessions are a valuable way to inform large groups about your resources, but smaller customized end-user sessions are becoming increasingly popular. For example: Hold a Corporate and Competitive Intelligence session for your Engineering Village Subscription. Or organize a Sales and Marketing team session for your Scopus subscription. Or perhaps hold a pharmacovigilance session for your Embase.com or PharmaPendium subscriptions. Focused sessions help you market sessions to specific users and show the value of the product to their specific jobs.
Usage Reports and Account Administration
For many Elsevier products, your Account Development Manager can assist you with usage statistics and account administration. For example, your Account Development Manager can assist with accessing articles outside your ScienceDirect subscription, help you link your Elsevier subscriptions together, assist you with accessing the ScienceDirect/Scopus Admin Tool and Usage Reports Tool and more. |
